Tourism is an integral part of the economy of Mauritius and occupies an important position in the plans for national development. Concurrently, safety and security are vital to providing quality in tourism. The Mauritius Police Force has a crucial function for preserving this peaceful social fabric that constitutes the Mauritian society.
The unit Police du Tourisme (PDT) was set up on 29th of September 2003 to ensure safety and security of tourists in the island. The tourists visiting our island has significantly increased from 700, 000 in year 2003 to 1, 399,408 in 2018 and urges for a constant policing in this field by the police.
Mission
The mission of the Police du Tourisme is two-fold, namely:
(a) To provide for the safety and security of tourists.
(b) To assist the local Police/CID/ADSU, etc, in the investigation of complaints/cases reported by tourists and to keep them informed of the progress and outcome thereof.
Objectives
a. To ensure Safety & Security of tourists;
b. To maintain High visibility at Tourist Attraction Sites and Cultural interests;
c. To act as a Police de ‘Proximité’ with Local Communities;
d. To attend to cases/ complaints;
e. To adopt a Multi agency approach in policing;
f. To control & monitor Tourist Enterprise Licences(TEL) issued by the Tourism Authority;
g. To carry out Targeted operations (Alco test; Beach Hawkers and Canvassers check; Restaurants; Night Clubs, Noise pollution…); and
h. To organize Security Platforms with stakeholders of the Tourism Sector and to carry out sensitization campaigns on tourist protection.
The Unit works in close collaboration with tourism stakeholders, in particular:-

• Security Guards based in hotels
